Confession time!

Have you ever had 'that' feeling?

The one where you feel on edge and your body is wound up like a clock spring? You are holding yourself together so tightly, because if you don't, something might snap?

I did.

I am the mother of a child with special needs and for the last few months I have been craving a break. Sounds harsh, doesn't it? I am a mother; therefore the welfare of my child should come before mine! However, I think it is important to recognise that caring for a person with a severe disability is not an easy task, no matter how much I *ADORE* my child. There comes a time when some respite is an absolute necessity (I am speaking for myself here).

The type of respite that involves handing over of the care and responsibility of my child to someone else. The letting go of all the stress that comes from raising a child with complex needs. No more thinking about the food that he eats or doesn't eat. No more interruptions because the kid needs help with toileting. No more angst over the fact that he is having way too much screen time!

So, after nearly fifteen years of parenting an autistic child and approaching the age of fifty, I took some time out. For sure, I have left my child before, although there have always been those sneaky invisible threads holding us together. This time, I passed on the responsibility of those threads over to his father.

I hopped on a plane and traveled to another country.... and left the husband and kids behind.

I went home to spend my 50th Birthday with my Mum and three sisters. It has been eleven years since my Mum has had all four daughters under one roof, the downside of living so far away from each other!

It was brilliant, absolutely bloody brilliant.

I was away for three weeks and loved every minute of it.

The husband and kids managed just fine without me.

I didn't miss them. Not once!

As for 'that' feeling ~ it has now disappeared.

My Reality ~ Holidays

We have just arrived back home after a weekend away. Due to a coffee stop on route, I found myself driving the remainder of the journey ALONE! This is practically unheard of... me alone? I turned on the radio and drove. For the life of me I don't know how I got home! My mind started wandering and I started thinking about my situation and then the REALITY of my situation. My mind went through a whole range of emotions. Sadness, despair, anger, extreme anger, acceptance, a bit more anger, a few swear words! Of course I realise why I feel this way and I also know that it will pass!

I came to the conclusion that in order to work my way through my emotions is to write about 'My Reality' So here I am.... blogging about some of the crap that I go through! I am not sure how many 'My Reality' posts I will write and my language may deteriorate somewhat, but..... here goes....

Holidays

At the beginning of each long holiday I tell myself, "I can get through this". I remind myself of how far I have come. I have moved on from those early days of feeling very low, despondent and downright depressed at having my child with me 24/7.... to embracing the fact that school holidays are a perfect opportunity to slow down, chill and just go with the flow! Holidays have become much easier with time.

Hah!

I have just got through two whole weeks of rolling whatever way the wind blows. I am talking autism, stimming, the constant tapping on my shoulder, code undies, the repetitive mind blowing dull day-to-day routine of feeding, bathing, going out for coffee, grocery shopping... and any other activity I can think of that helps to keep us occupied! I try to keep off facebook so that I am not constantly reminded of all the lovely things that *normal* families are doing with their days. That's right, I am not part of a normal family.... I am part of a very dysfunctional family unit! Oh sure, a lot of people will say that each family is dysfunctional in their own way, however, throw a special needs child into the mix and then you will REALLY know what I mean by dysfunctional!

Can you feel it people? Can you feel my anger coming through? Shit, I so want to be normal and I want my child to be autism free. I want to have a regular life without all this extra stuff....

It's okay, this is just me after spending two solid weeks with my child without much of a break. The tension starts building and my shoulders become stiff. I know that I am very irritable and that it wouldn't take much for me to lose the plot! I can hear my inner goddess bitch saying "don't give me any grief, because my comeback won't be pleasant!" This irritability is only a short term thing. As soon as I have a break and/or my life goes back to normal (Nick at school five mornings a week ~ me free for 5 mornings a week!) then I become my old self again!

I need my space. I need my time alone. I need time out from 'My Reality'.

Thankfully, I have a big treat in order to keep me on track. A reward to keep my temper in check. A reminder that I am soon going to have some time out.

As I was nearing home, the following song came on the radio. I pumped up the volume and cast adrift my negative thoughts.....

The only words I remember are.... "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". Those words made me feel a little brighter! :)

Taking a break....

We all know that April is big in the autism community. For us in South Africa, April also means school holidays and long weekends, which makes for a very topsy turvy month! My birthday is in April, although it is a bit of a non event in my house! For my husband, April brings the extra challenge of running the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town.

Funnily enough, my birthday, the marathon and the expiry of my RDI subscription all fall on the same day!

Anyway, for the month of April, I have decided to give myself a birthday present!

I am going to take a break!

Obviously I am not giving myself a break from autism, so to speak! That would be rather silly considering that my child has autism and I certainly can't ignore him! :)

Why am I taking a break?
I am tired, so tired of trying my best, so tired of trying to be Super Mum. I am tired of wearing my sensible big girl undies. I am tired of trying hard to maintain a balance. I admit it, more time and energy is put into my child with special needs than into me or the rest of the family. So, for the month of April I am going to tilt that balance in the opposite direction.........

I am also going to give myself permission to NOT FEEL GUILTY if I don't give my child 100%..... Oops, that sounds a bit far fetched, but I am sure that you catch my drift!

I am not going to think about assignments, interactions and engagement. I am not going to think about following through on the O.T, Physio and SLT homework. In fact, I am going to try really hard not to think about any type of intervention.

If my child wants to eat Spaghetti Bolognaise (loaded with lentils and carrots!) every night during April, well then, so be it! If my boy wants to hop into my bed to watch a bit of TV in the early hours of the morning (not before 6am though!) I think I may join him.

I am giving myself permission to take a break and not feel guilty about it!

In fact, I am going to be a very chilled mum woman from the first day of April right up until the very last day of April!

I also think that Nick is going to love having a relaxed mum!  I may have a little battle on my hands when May comes around and we commence with the whole routine again! :)

Oh yeah, I am also going to Cape Town for a long weekend with the Hubs and Teenager. Can't let the man run a marathon and not be there to catch him at the finish line. I wish we could take Nick with us; however, there are going to be too many people, too many social functions and too many changes ~ I know that he will be much happier staying at home!

I am giving myself permission to take a break and not feel guilty about it!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY *ME*
